Safe use of a Manually Fed Wood Chipper

NPTC Level 2 Award

1 Day Course

​

​

This one day course covers the use of manually fed wood chippers, pre-use safety checks and maintenance,

identification of controls and instruments, operating the machine to chip material appropriate to the capacity of the

machine, and hitching and unhitching of the machine.

​

Who is this course for?

​

      • Anyone who uses wood chippers as part of their work, in arboriculture, forestry, landscaping, grounds

      maintenance or horticulture

      • Anyone required to have a Certificate of Competence to use to manually fed woodchipper in the workplace

 

Course Format

​

      • Duration: 1 day

      • Assessment: Complete a practical test with 1-2-1 verbal questioning

      • Awarding Body: NPTC Level 2 Certificate

​

Requirements

​

      • Must bring appropriate PPE

      • You must be 16 years old or over

      • No formal prerequisites

​

Course Content

​

      • Know the health and safety requirements for operating a wood chipper

      • Be able to carry out a risk assessment on a site

      • Be able to prepare the equipment and site for wood chipping operations

      • Be able to operate a wood chipper

      • Carry out maintenance on a wood chipper

​

Equipment requirements

​

      • PPE:

​

            o Wood-chipper machinery will be supplied by The Arborist Academy UK Ltd

            o Chainsaw helmet ear and eye protection

            o Gloves (EN381-7)

            o Steel toe-cap boots with chainsaw protection

​

​

Current Forestry England guidelines also require Forestry and Chainsaw workers to carry a Mandatory Personal

Forestry First Aid Kit, which includes a Haemostatic Bandage, Application Tourniquet and Whistle, at all times

 

Certification

​

On completion of the course, successful candidates will receive a certificate from NPTC.
