Safe Use of Hand Held Hedge Cutters

This course will provide the candidate with the essential skills for correctly maintaining and safely operating a

handheld hedge trimmer.

​

Who is this course for?

​

      • Suitable for anyone who uses a handheld hedge trimmer in a professional capacity, such as a tree surgeon,

      grounds maintenance operative, or landscape gardener.

      • Anyone required to have a Certificate of Competence to use to a hedge trimmer in the workplace

 

Course Format

​

      • Assessment: Training Followed by assessment

      • Awarding Body: NPTC Level 2 Certificate

 

Requirements

​

      • Must bring appropriate PPE

      • You must be 16 years old or over

      • No formal prerequisites

 

Course Content

​

      • How to carry out a risk assessment

      • Understand the health and safety legislation that underpins hand held hedge trimmer operations

      • The appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for hand held hedge trimmer operations

      • Health and safety features of the hedge trimmer

      • Know that there are different types of hedge trimmer

      • Understand hedge types and growth habits

      • How to maintain the hedge trimmer

      • How to prepare work area

      • How to operate a hedge trimmer

      • How to clean, store and transport equipment safely and appropriately.

 

Equipment requirements

​

      • PPE:

​

            o Chainsaw helmet ear and eye protection

            o Gloves

            o Steel toe-cap boots with chainsaw protection

 

Current Forestry England guidelines also require Forestry and Chainsaw workers to carry a Mandatory Personal

Forestry First Aid Kit, which includes a Haemostatic Bandage, Application Tourniquet and Whistle, at all times.

 

Certification

​

On completion of the course, successful candidates will be sent a City & Guilds Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Hedge Trimmers certificate from NPTC.
