The Certificate of Competence in Using a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness (NPTC Level 2) is suitable for individuals
who use chainsaws as part of their work in arboriculture, forestry, or other industries. This qualification provides the
necessary knowledge, understanding, and skills to operate chainsaws safely and in line with industry standards and
current legislation. It covers essential topics such as risk assessment, emergency planning, tree condition, and
pruning technique.

• Duration: 4 days
• Assessment: 3 days training and 1 day Assessment
• Awarding Body: NPTC Level 2 Certificate

Requirements
​
• You must be 16 years old or over
• Candidates must have successfully completed:
​
o Chainsaw and Cross-cutting Maintenance (CS30)
o Felling Small Trees (CS31)
o Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue (CS38)

• This course is physically demanding and requires the carrying and movement of equipment in a woodland
environment

Equipment & PPE
​
• Top Handled Chainsaw with fuel and oil
• Climbing helmet with visor and ear protection
• Chainsaw Trousers (Type C)
• Suitable chainsaw boots with ankle support
• Gloves (rigging, sailing or latex work gloves)
• Rescue knife and large dressing bandage (if possible)
• Two tree climbing ropes (37-45m)
• Tree climbing harness
• 4 Prussik Loops
• 7 Karabiners including 3 x oval
• 1 13mm split tail 5 metres
• 1 positioner
• 1 pair climbing spikes• 1 throw line and throw weight,
• 1 anchor sling
• 1 multi saver
• Tool Loop

Climbing equipment to be used on course must have appropriate LOLER certificate. Equipment can be provided for
course if required for a small hire charge.
If you are providing equipment, please ensure that the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act and any
relevant regulations are met.

Current Forestry England guidelines also require Forestry and Chainsaw workers to carry a Mandatory Personal
Forestry First Aid Kit, which includes a Haemostatic Bandage, Application Tourniquet and Whistle, at all times.
Certification
​
On completion of the course, successful candidates will be sent a City & Guilds Using a Chainsaw from a
Rope and Harness NPTC Level 2 certificate.
